This September, the Dottie’s Goat Farm (DGF) crew is participating in National Preparedness Month by actively fighting against the spread of wildfires. How are we doing it? By serving our clients through the “goatscaping” method. A method that allows goats to cut down dense and dry vegetation that, if left unattended, can become fuel to a damaging wildfire.

California has been hit with devastating wildfires, year after year, making wildfire risk a year-round concern. So, we are committed to helping as many landowners as possible to reduce that vulnerability. We are so proud that our teams have been working tirelessly, around the clock, tackling many fire risk areas in several Amador County communities and beyond.

DGF customers, like Jim D., sees wildfires as an imminent threat to his property. He had been proactive at protecting his home but was curious to try something new. “I am a retired firefighter, so I am fully aware of *Wildland Urban Interface, and this is it! That is where we are at. So, I always do it myself and weed eat everything, but this (goatscaping method) is so much easier because of the slope and the poison oak,” Jim said.

Keep vegetation and flammable items managed or away from the home.
Zone 0: extends 0 - 5 feet from the home
Zone 1: extends up to 30 feet from the home

Unlike metal or heavy weed-cutting equipment, which could spark fires during the hot months, the goatscaping method offers a much safer alternative to land clearing. Goats, instead of igniting a fire, are able to clear high amounts of dry and tall weeds easily. And if that was not enough, the cost is so much lower than when machines and operators are employed.
